We are hosting a symposium at the HSS!
The History of Science Society and the European Society for the History of Science will hold their first joint meeting from 13 to 16 July 2026 in Edinburgh, Scotland, supported by the British Society for the History of Science. The Science and Empire Commission is pleased to announce its participation in this event with an organized symposium, marking a long-awaited return to the international stage beyond the DHST/ICHST International Congresses.
Under the theme “Shifting Perspectives: Plural Worlds, Contested Sciences,” the conference invites historians of science, technology, and medicine to reflect on plural knowledge traditions, contested narratives, and epistemic diversity.
The SCIEMP symposium, titled Science and Empire in the Anthropocene: Towards an Environmental Shift, comprises four sessions exploring the complex entanglements between science, empire, and environment. Spanning cases from the Amazon rainforest and the Iberian Peninsula to colonial India, Manchuria, and postcolonial Africa, the sessions bring together sixteen scholars working across natural history, botany, zoology, meteorology, medicine, and ecology. Together, they examine how scientific knowledge was produced and mobilized in the service of empires, and how colonized peoples, rural communities, and marginalized groups contested, reinterpreted, and reworked that knowledge on their own terms.
Running through all four sessions is a shared concern with the environmental dimensions of imperial science: how landscapes, species, and bodies were transformed by colonial knowledge-making, and what legacies those transformations carry into the present.

Education and Progress: The Escuela de Ingenieros and Engineers’ Training in Peru (1911–1930)
I wrote this article to explore how technical education became a field of negotiation between empire and nation in early twentieth-century Peru. The Escuela de Ingenieros, initially shaped by the French positivist model and later reoriented toward North American pragmatism, did not simply import ideas; it negotiated with them. Within a context of scarce resources and strong state dependence, Peruvian engineers sought to adapt foreign paradigms to local needs, crafting a practical vision of modernization that affirmed their own professional agency. Yet this search for legitimacy relied entirely on Western scientific canons, overlooking the long Andean engineering knowledge and traditions that had shaped the territory for centuries. In doing so, engineers not only negotiated imperial models but also helped to consolidate a centralized modern state that equated progress with Western science, reaffirming its authority as the universal language of development in the Andes.

Science and Empire Commission Sponsored Symposium for the upcoming ESHS/HSS Joint Meeting
University of Edinburgh, 13-16 July 2026
ST – Science and Empire in the Anthropocene: Towards an Environmental Shift
The current and future relevance of the humanities will depend on how they critically address the ongoing planetary climate crisis, for example, by discussing its historical roots and causes, examining its social, economic, and environmental effects, or re-imagining forms of solidarity and kinship between humans and non-humans. Historians of science and empires have, in various degrees, already contributed to this debate, investigating the co-production of imperial formations, scientific knowledge, and environments (widely defined) in the last five centuries. This innovative stream of research has spanned from the transformation of imperial ecosystems and landscapes by medicine, ecology, engineering, and other sciences; how public health and ecological concerns justified dispossessing local communities so to create natural reserves; the role of imperial agents in the extermination, circulation, and spread of animals, plants, and micro-organisms across the globe; to the legacy of extractive, colonial, and imperial practices in the shaping of the Plantation-, Anthropo-, and Capilo-cene. Drawing upon these previous works, this symposium aims to reinforce the discussions on the complex intertwinements between Science, Empire, and Environment. Speakers are invited to develop theoretical reflections, explore methodological possibilities, and present innovative case studies to explore challenges and possibilities of an environmental turn for the research on Science and Empire. Contributions on, but not limited to, the following topics are particularly welcomed:
- Multi-species assemblages, plural worlds, and Science and Empire;
- Science and Empire and the empirical and epistemological making of Plantation-, Anthropo-, Capitalo-cene, and other geological eras;
- Writing on Science and Empire in the Anthropocene;
- Creating and contesting imperial environmental sciences;
- The co-construction of Environment, Science, and Empire;
- Science, Empire, and multiple planetary crises;
- Ecology, Diseases, and Empires.
If interested in joining this symposium, please send title, abstract (200 words), and short bio (100 words) to scienceandempirecommission@gmail.com by 25 November 2025.
